Michigan Considering a Total Ban on Adult Content Online (3 photos)
Remember when the internet was just beginning to develop? Dial-up modems beeped, pages loaded slowly, but everything seemed so free and full of discovery. No one thought about censorship or surveillance, and the internet was like the Wild West—a place for adventure without boundaries. And now, 34 years later, the world has come to the point where, in 2025, the US state of Michigan has decided to ban all adult content, and not just for children.
In short, the bill, introduced on September 11, 2025, by six Republican legislators, applies to all residents of the state, including adults. It defines any image or description of sexual acts, including animated, AI-generated, or textual forms, as "violating public morality." The ban will include pornography, ASMR with sexual overtones, manga, anime, and audiobooks. Images of transgender people will also be considered immoral content.
Furthermore, officials propose a complete ban on VPNs and any traffic masking software. Internet service providers will be required to monitor and block such content, with fines of up to $500,000 for failure to comply.
Critics from human rights organizations call this a violation of free speech enshrined in the First Amendment. Sponsors, including Josh Schriver, argue the bill is about protecting morals and family. If passed, Michigan will be the first state with such restrictions for adults, which could inspire other regions.
This isn't a law, but a proposal pending in the Michigan House of Representatives. It hasn't yet passed committee, the Senate, or a vote, and its chances of passing are low due to criticism for violating the First Amendment. However, as media reports point out, such initiatives could become a template for other states or escalate to the national level.
Just don't tell our officials about this news.
