Homemade 1974 Geoff Crossley Special sports car put up for auction (15 photos)
A homemade Geoff Crossley Special sports car, built more than half a century ago, is up for auction. It was made by racer Geoff Crossley. The car is equipped with a modified Buick V8 engine. They plan to earn from 30 to 50 thousand dollars for the car.
Geoff Crossley was well known to British motorsport fans. During his career, he scored over 40 wins in 200 starts. His rivals on the track were some of the world's biggest names, including future Formula 1 champion Jackie Stewart.
Buick's 3.5-liter V8 engine was introduced in 1961. At that time, it was the lightest production V8 in the world, weighing 144 kilograms. All thanks to the block and cylinder heads made of aluminum. The Geoff Crossley Special is equipped with a modified version of this engine, the displacement of which is 100 cc larger.
Crossley spent more than 5,000 hours building his own race car. The chassis and body were made by him from scratch himself. The power system has four Weber carburetors. The engine has changed both internal parts and, for example, the crankcase. The project took six years, from 1968 to 1974.
It is reported that the car never left the creator's family. Now it is being sold by the direct heirs of Crossley. Experts have previously estimated the lot at between 30 and 50 thousand pounds sterling.
