70-year-old Formula 1 car Ferrari Tipo 625 put up for auction (13 photos)
A 1954 Ferrari Tipo 625 Monoposto is up for auction at RM Sotheby's. This Formula 1 car is considered one of the rarest. It belonged to racing driver Alfonso de Portago. In 2022, the car was already offered at auction for $4 million, but then the owner was not satisfied with this amount.
The exact same car brought Alberto Ascari world championship titles in 1952 and 1953. A total of six cars were built for factory racers and five for outside customers. An inline two-liter “four” is installed under the hood.
After the modernization that the sports car underwent within the walls of the Ferrari plant, in 1955 it became the property of Alfonso de Portago. Before becoming interested in racing, he tried himself, in particular, in bobsleigh and horse racing. Driving another Ferrari, he died at the 1957 Mille Miglia at the age of 28. Portago's co-driver and nine spectators also died in the horrific accident.
During its life, this specimen has changed several collectors, repeatedly participated in various races, and was shown at exhibitions and festivals. The machine is in fully working order with original components. The current auction is closed, the price is provided to potential buyers upon personal request.
