During the recent floods in Nepal, one particular house caught the world's attention. The disaster was triggered by a glacier outburst, which unleashed a massive, fast-moving surge of floodwater. A landslide blocked the bed of the Lhende River, causing a "cascading flood" downstream along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. Water levels along one section of the Trishuli River rose by 9 meters in just 30 minutes. 
A powerful mudslide swept away everything in its path, yet one house managed to stand firm.
The house is located in a rural area along the Nepal–Tibet border on the Bhote Koshi River near the village of Bahrabise in Sindhupalchok District. It is situated in a small rural village a few dozen kilometers from the capital, Kathmandu.
The building caught the attention of news cameras on August 26, 2026, when a glacial outburst in Tibet breached a natural dam, sending a catastrophic flash flood down the valley that wiped out every surrounding building.
Footage captured a family huddling on the roof and inside the building—all of whom survived thanks to the strength of the reinforced concrete frame.
The primary reason for its survival was proper engineering. Unlike most of the lightweight brick and mud-brick structures nearby, this house featured a heavy-duty reinforced concrete foundation and thick pillars capable of withstanding the immense pressure and impact of a mudslide packed with rocks and debris.
