A man broke through the roof to save a baby from a flood (5 photos + 1 video)
The south of Brazil has been hit by horrific flooding. Families fled to roofs and attics to escape the elements. The media showed footage of a military man breaking through the roof with a brick and pulling out a baby. And he does this while suspended on a cable from a helicopter. 
Two-thirds of the state of Rio Grande do Sul is currently flooded, according to civil defense. This territory is home to 800,000 people. Many people have neither drinking water nor electricity in their homes. 
In other pictures, a woman and her 4-month-old baby with pneumonia are put on a helicopter and sent to the hospital.
Search and rescue teams are packing aircraft to capacity. So, in one helicopter there were 30 survivors. 
The death toll from the floods has risen to 75, with 155 injured and 103 people missing. More than 88,000 people have been evacuated, but only 16,600 of them are in shelters.
In the city of Bento Goncalves, more than 533 mm of rain fell during the storm. The water level in the Guaiba River in Porto Alegre, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, rose by 2 m, which is a record level. The main airport remains closed. 
Brazil did not have time to recover from last year's misfortunes. In September 2023, an extratropical cyclone brought destruction, and in November a storm drowned the southern part of the country for a week.
At a press conference, the governor of Rio Grande do Sul said the 2024 flood was the worst disaster in the state's history.
