In 2005, the MMORPG World of Warcraft experienced one of its most famous in-game incidents—the so-called "Corrupted Blood epidemic," which later even caught the attention of researchers studying real-world infectious diseases. The event occurred after the release of the Zul'Gurub raid, where the boss Hakkar the Soulflayer inflicted a buff on players that gradually drained their health and could infect others. Initially, this mechanic was intended to only work within the dungeon, but a bug allowed the infection to spread beyond its boundaries. Hunters and warlocks accidentally spread the buff through their pets to major cities, leading to the mass spread of the "disease" among thousands of characters.

Chaos erupted in virtual capitals, reminiscent of a real-life pandemic: some players panicked and died en masse, others tried to help and only worsened the situation, and some deliberately spread the infection. Ultimately, the developers were forced to urgently reboot the servers and release an urgent fix to stop the spread. This incident later became the subject of study – it was used as a model for analyzing human behavior during epidemics and mass panic, demonstrating how realistically societies can behave even in a virtual environment.
