A Family in India Arranged a Funeral for Their Beloved Car
An unusual burial ceremony for a car that had become a family talisman took place in the village of Padarshinga, Gujarat. The owner, construction entrepreneur Sanjay Polara, held a lavish funeral for his 12-year-old minivan, attended by approximately 1,500 people.
Decorated with flowers and garlands, the car was ceremoniously transported from the family farm, where a special 4.5-meter-deep grave had been prepared for it. After a Hindu samadhi ritual involving the recitation of mantras and the offering of rose petals, the car, covered in a green cloth, was lowered into the ground using construction equipment.
"I bought this car almost 12 years ago, and it has brought prosperity and respect to the family," Polara explained.
According to the owner, the car has become a symbol of good luck for his family and business. About $4,000 was spent on organizing the ceremony, which included a rite with the participation of clergy and refreshments for 1,500 guests. A tree is planned to be planted at the burial site.
