A chef was caught cheating at a curry-eating contest at the Thai restaurant Gold Curry. Sebastian Schwesinger, 37, attempted to conquer a 10-kilogram portion for 20,000 baht. However, CCTV captured the tourist from Leipzig, Germany, hiding some of the food in his backpack.

Schwesinger denied any wrongdoing when staff demanded payment for the gigantic meal.

It was later discovered that the German had pulled a similar stunt at two more restaurants and won prizes totaling 30,000 baht.

Jack Whitsaruth, manager of Gold Curry in Bangkok, shared: "A customer came in and asked for a 10-kilogram curry.

He started eating at 3:10 PM and finished at 3:50 PM. At first, the staff didn't notice the deception, but 20 minutes later, one of the employees saw the customer putting the rice in a backpack next to him."

"The staff informed me of the incident and asked me to check the CCTV footage to verify the information. I reviewed the footage and confirmed that this was indeed what happened. Since the camera was far away and the image was blurry, I asked the staff to continue monitoring and record video for evidence."

Schwesinger refused to open his backpack, which, according to those around him, "stank of curry."

Police arrived at the scene because he allegedly tried to flee, claiming he had no money to pay.

In the video from December 12, the man scoops up food with his left hand and throws it into his backpack.

During the investigation, officers found photos of the tourist from two other similar contests. So, the scammer won 10,000 baht for a 6-kilogram portion and 20,000 for an 8-kilogram portion.

The manager added: "When the Thonglor police station arrived, he said he would transfer the money from an account in Germany. He said it was supposed to arrive the next day. But I found out that the transfer can be canceled at any time. So that didn't suit us."

We were amazed at how quickly he ate the curry. Even experienced chefs usually need more time, and they often videotape themselves during the process. But he didn't do that."

"Eight kilograms in just 40 minutes would be a record in Thailand. Why didn't the staff monitor him? It's important to remember that the staff are also serving other customers. And being monitored can put them under pressure."

The German left his passport at the restaurant and returned the next day to pay the bill.

Gold Curry has notified other restaurants about the dishonest customer.

Witsarut said his business partners are considering filing a lawsuit against the tourist.

Gold Curry is a chain of Japanese restaurants with eight branches in Bangkok and other cities.

Each location hosts a daily "Extreme Curry" contest. Participants must eat a portion of 2 to 10 kilograms of curry in one hour. The winner receives a cash prize of 10,000 to 40,000 baht.
