A couple threw glass into food to avoid paying at a restaurant (3 photos + 1 video)
A couple dining at a San Marino restaurant in north-west England were caught on CCTV trying to trick staff after they dropped glass into their food before refusing to pay the bill.
A customer complained to a waiter about a sharp object in her pasta, claiming it "almost broke" her veneers worth thousands of pounds. She and her husband refused to pay the £139 bill, tried to get a refund, and then left the restaurant.
"She had almost finished her meal when she called one of the waiters and said that she had found a piece of glass in her food," said restaurant director Miraz Yolku.
CCTV footage helped to reveal the truth. In the footage, you can see the man pulling a piece of glass out of his pocket and handing it to his partner.
"The customer simply put the glass on the table, wrapped it in a piece of napkin, and pretended that it was in her mouth. Everyone was shocked. The employees became worried and called the management," Yolku noted.
The manager tried to explain: "Sorry, but that just can't happen - you can't find glass in food. And it's not the kind of glass we use in the kitchen." However, the customers still refused to pay, got up and walked away.
Police investigation
The incident was later reported to Cheshire Police, who launched an investigation. "At 1am on Sunday, April 6, police were called to reports of a theft/fraud at a restaurant in Widnes. Three customers left the establishment without paying for their food because they allegedly found a piece of broken glass in their food," a police spokesman said.
The staff of the restaurant "San Marino" posted a video of the incident on their Facebook page*. "Such fraudulent schemes harm hard-working businesses like ours," they noted.
