A $10 Necklace Turns Out to Be Real Black Pearls (3 photos)
A woman bought a vintage necklace for just $10 at a thrift store and unexpectedly discovered it was a genuine freshwater black pearl.
The shopper shared her find on the popular Reddit under the username u/Rinne18. In the post, she explained that she spotted the unusual piece of jewelry at the Value Village store and decided to buy it "for good luck."
The next day, the woman stopped by a jeweler to have some old jewelry repaired and also showed off the new necklace she bought for $10.
"He immediately said they were genuine freshwater pearls. With this purchase, I think I've exhausted all my luck for the year," she said.
The post quickly gained popularity on Reddit, receiving over 4,200 likes and hundreds of comments from users delighted with the rare find. Many admitted they now also wanted to visit their local thrift store.
"This is a wonderful find! They are beautiful! I have a similar necklace from my grandmother, and honestly, the black pearls look much more exquisite than the white ones," wrote one participant.
Other users shared tips on how to modernize the jewelry: making it into a bracelet or adding silver accents. The owner herself admitted that the pearls fit quite tightly, so she considered lengthening the necklace, but the idea of wearing it as a bracelet struck her as "simply brilliant."
Jewelers advise buyers to pay attention to the weight, texture, and quality of the clasps—these are the most common indicators of authenticity.
