Daihatsu is organizing a farewell ceremony for the Copen model before its discontinuation (3 photos)
End of production and future plans
Production of the compact roadster Daihatsu Copen will be discontinued in August 2026, ending the history of one of the most characteristic Japanese kei cars. However, the company has already hinted at the development of a new generation, which may differ in market position.
Historical path of the model
The first Copen appeared in 2002 with a compact two-door roadster body and an electrically folding hardtop - a first in the kei car segment. Production ended in 2012, leaving a two-year hiatus before the second generation was launched in 2014. This version featured sharper body lines and modular panels, while maintaining the proportions of the kei car. The most interesting modification was the Copen GR Sport, which appeared in 2019 with chassis and exterior updates.
Farewell events and prospects
Daihatsu will not let the Copen simply disappear. In April 2026, the company will hold a special farewell event across Japan dedicated to loyal customers and the communities associated with the car.

Future concept
More importantly, the company has confirmed that it is working on a future Copen. While there is no set release date, the Vision Copen concept, unveiled at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, gives us a glimpse of what to expect.
2023 Daihatsu Vision Copen Concept
The concept looks like a modern interpretation of the original Copen, with round headlights and clean surfaces. However, it has significantly larger dimensions – 3835 mm long, which suggests the possibility of avoiding the limitations of the kei car segment and creating a worthy competitor for the next Mazda MX-5.
Another interesting detail: the concept is equipped with a 1.3-liter three-cylinder engine running on carbon-neutral fuel. This will give more power compared to the tiny 658-cc unit of previous generations – according to rumors, at least 150 hp. In addition, there are unconfirmed reports about the Suzuki Cappuccino roadster and the Toyota SF-R compact sports car, which may share a common platform.
Official statement from the manufacturer
At the end of August 2026, production of the current Copen model will be discontinued. The appeal of a small open sports car must be connected to the future. For the Copen to remain Copen. This is a proactive choice.
In order to be able to release Copen into the world again, we are currently making various preparations and reflections. Although the current model has come to an end, the challenge continues.
However, since its launch in 2002, it has been loved by everyone. For Copen, who has been running alongside, this is also a big milestone. Therefore, in a place where I can meet you all in person, we decided to hold an event that brings together people who love Copen.
The target time is around spring 2026. All participants will be able to enjoy Copen. I think it will be a special place where we can connect our hearts. Because we also love Copen. Because we want to ensure that this end of production is connected to the future. This little car is filled with great romance.
Because I truly believe in it. (This car is so cute, there is nothing like it.)
This is a milestone for Copen. We hope to share our love for Copen with all of you. I hope it will be a good opportunity. I look forward to meeting you.

Daihatsu GR Copen
The end of production of the current Copen model does not mean the end of the brand in the sports car segment. The move to larger sizes and more powerful engines could open up new market opportunities for Daihatsu, allowing it to compete with established models such as the Mazda MX-5. The social reaction to the farewell events and the demand for future models will show whether the company can preserve the unique character of the Copen in a new version adapted to modern safety requirements and environmental standards.
