DiCaprio’s Niece: From Two-State Police Search to Shopping at Prada Together (11 photos)

For a man who publicly maintains he has no children, Leonardo DiCaprio has kept one young girl close to his side for over a decade. Normandie Farrar—DiCaprio’s niece—was placed on a missing children’s registry at just six years old when her parents entered another tailspin of drug arrests and theft. What followed was a custody battle, guardianship awarded to her grandfather, and an uncle named Leo who never uttered a single word about it publicly—though the paparazzi tell the story for him. Read on to discover how a broken family survived, and why Hollywood’s most famous bachelor stepped up to play the father figure.

Where Did the "Niece" Come From?

To make sense of this story, you first have to untangle the DiCaprio family tree—and it is far more complex than it appears.

Leo’s father, George DiCaprio, was an underground comic publisher. In 1995, he married Peggy Farrar. At the time, Peggy already had a son named Adam from her previous marriage to Michael Farrar. That made Adam Farrar Leonardo’s stepbrother. Leo was in his early twenties at the time, his career just beginning to take off.

Normandie is the daughter of Adam and his partner, Charity Moore. She was born on April 12, 2007. Technically, Normandie is Leo’s step-niece, but the family simply refers to her as his niece—and for all practical purposes, that is exactly what she is.

Two Brothers, Two Divergent Paths

Adam Farrar was actually an actor before Leo. In the late 1970s and 1980s, he appeared in TV commercials, the series Galactica 1980, and several other projects. Reports suggest it was watching his older stepbrother that first sparked young Leo's desire to become an actor.

The brothers were close. They went to Lakers games together and were regulars on the Hollywood party scene. Then Titanic came out—and everything changed. Leo skyrocketed to global superstardom, while Adam was left behind; his final film, Pups, was released in 1999.

Their relationship began to drift apart over time. In a 2016 interview, Adam explained that his spiraling addiction drove them apart, while Leo’s inner circle kept their distance. Adam insisted there was no dramatic fallout—he simply felt the door had closed on him.

Meanwhile, Adam's arrests continued to mount. In 2000, he was detained on suspicion of making terroristic threats against his girlfriend, though charges were ultimately dropped. Later came arrests for drug possession, theft, and harassment. In 2013, he was arrested for heroin possession and failed to appear for his court hearing, leading the judge to issue a warrant for his arrest.

January 2014: The Girl Disappears

By 2014, Normandie was six years old. Both of her parents, Adam and Charity, had long been under the supervision of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS)—a clear sign that the court viewed their lifestyle as an ongoing threat to the child.

On January 20, 2014, Charity Moore was arrested in Texas on charges of possessing three controlled substances, theft, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Four days later, on January 24, Adam Farrar was arrested in the same state. He had gone to the jail to visit Charity, only to be taken into custody in the lobby on outstanding warrants from Los Angeles for drug possession, theft, and telephone harassment.

Following both arrests, Normandie was nowhere to be found. It turned out that under a court order, the child was legally forbidden from leaving California, yet her parents had been living with her in Texas. Normandie was added to the Department of Justice’s missing children database, with her last known whereabouts recorded as July 31, 2013.

Police suspected Adam had deliberately hidden his daughter prior to his arrest. He was subsequently charged with child concealment.

On January 30, 2014, the little girl was located. The Los Angeles County DCFS press office confirmed that Normandie had been found safe and sound. She was placed under the guardianship of her grandfather, George DiCaprio.

Leo Takes Her Under His Wing

After returning to Los Angeles, Normandie moved in with her grandfather and Peggy Farrar. From that moment on, Leo began playing an increasingly active role in her life.

In the summer of 2023, paparazzi photographed Leo with his niece, father, and stepmother on a yacht off the coast of Italy. It looked like a standard family vacation—unless you knew that a few years earlier, the girl had been the subject of a multi-state police search.

In March 2024, they were photographed together at a Lakers vs. Milwaukee Bucks game at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Leo sat beside his niece, his father, and Peggy—in the exact same arena where he used to watch games with his brother Adam.

In May 2024, they were spotted again—this time on a luxury shopping trip in Beverly Hills. The group visited Tiffany & Co., Prada, and grabbed lunch at South Beverly Grill. Grandfather George and Peggy were right alongside them, but Normandie’s parents were nowhere to be seen.

What the Father Says

Adam Farrar has admitted that his relationship with Leo was destroyed by addiction rather than an outright feud. He claims he still loves his brother and longs to see his daughter again.

Sources close to Adam claimed he believes Leo’s star power influenced the court's decision to strip him of his parental rights, though there is no official documentation to support this. Leo has never publicly commented on his brother's situation or his own role in Normandie’s life.

In January 2016, Adam and Charity were arrested once again for theft. Two months later, Adam failed to show up for his court date. The current state of his relationship with his daughter has not been made public.

Normandie Today

In August 2026, Normandie—now 19 years old—was among the guests at Leo’s private party at Bar Jubilee in Los Angeles, alongside George, Peggy, and Jamie Foxx.

She keeps out of the spotlight. She has no public social media accounts and gives no interviews. However, paparazzi photos show she is acquainted with Leo’s girlfriend, Vittoria Ceretti, and is good friends with the children of Tobey Maguire, her uncle’s best friend.

Leo still offers no public commentary on their relationship or his family history. But year after year, paparazzi capture the exact same picture: standing beside a man who publicly has no children of his own is a girl once sought by police across two states. And she is clearly family.

What do you think? Should Leo help Adam rebuild his relationship with his daughter, or is he doing the right thing by shielding Normandie from that part of her life?
