Turkish archaeologists have unearthed the ruins of an ancient city. Among the finds is a Christian church built in the 5th century. At the entrance, scientists found a message to believers.
The excavations were carried out in Olympus, an ancient Lycian port city in Antalya Province. Work has been ongoing since 2006, but during the last season, archaeologists discovered many mosaic floors, as well as large vessels - pithos.
Gokcen Kurtulus Oztaskin, an associate professor at Pamukkale University, told Anadolu News Agency that the site continues to amaze with its mosaics.
The professor noted, “We discovered richly decorated mosaic floors in 2017, 2022 and 2023. This year, we discovered and restored the mosaic floors in Church No. 1.”
The most astonishing discovery was the inscription found at the entrance to the Christian temple.
Oztaskin translated this message as follows: "Only those who are on the righteous path may enter here."
Olympus was abandoned by its inhabitants in the 12th century, meaning that no one has seen the inscription since then. The mosaics also depict plant motifs that were popular in that era. The names of benefactors are also mentioned, indicating the prosperity of the wealthy class.
The ancient city has preserved ruins of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine architecture: several churches, a bridge and an entrance complex. Researchers also found the bishop's palace, the sarcophagus of Antimachus and the monumental tomb of Marcus Aurelius Archipolis.
