Residents of the Southwark area in London made a unique find right next to your home. As identified by the experts of the London Museum archeology, these are the remains of an ancient Roman mausoleum.
Residents of the Borough of Southwark in London noticed this unusual stone structure near your house. A little later I started working there. a team of archaeologists from the London Museum of Archeology (MOLA). As a result excavations, it was found that under the layer of earth is an ancient Roman mausoleum, which has preserved floors and part of the walls. Archaeologists believe that this place was used as a tomb for senior members of Roman society.
What surprised the experts most was how well the Roman mausoleum has been preserved: perhaps it is the most "untouched" of all ever discovered in the UK. In total, archaeologists have found two mosaics (one is the largest and central, and the second is smaller), platforms, well-preserved steps. It was most likely a big one. building with two floors. Also, during the excavations, more than 100 coins were found, parts ceramics, tiles and pieces of metal.
"This unique place gives us an idea of the image life and condition of this part of the city in Roman times: from an early phase construction, when London was expanding and richly decorated Roman buildings, until the late Roman period, when the settlement has shrunk and become more modest," says Antonietta Lehrz, senior archaeologist at the London Museum.
