Tesla Launches Robotaxi Rides Without Steering Wheels or Pedals (2 Photos + 1 Video)

Tesla has officially rolled out public rides in its fully autonomous Cybercab robotaxis, which feature no traditional driver controls. The steering-wheel-free rides are already available to hail in Austin, Texas. The company eventually plans to sell the Cybercab to private buyers, with the autonomous vehicles set to launch across Beijing, Shanghai, and several other Asian megacities throughout September.





The Cybercab joins Tesla's dedicated robotaxi fleet, which previously consisted solely of Model Y vehicles. Inside, the Cybercab offers just two passenger seats and a massive 22-inch display. According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the cabin is designed as a lounge space for relaxing on the go, where passengers can play games, watch movies, read books, or stay entertained throughout their journey.

The Cybercab is expected to handle the vast majority of rides, as Tesla data shows most trips are taken by just one or two passengers. Larger groups will still be able to book a Model Y. Passengers can control in-cabin settings directly through the same app used to hail the autonomous vehicle.

Private Cybercab owners will also be able to list their vehicles on the ride-hailing network to earn passive income. Tesla has already added a dedicated page to its official website where prospective owners can register their interest.

Tesla is also confirmed to bring the Cybercab to Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Hong Kong, though no official commercial launch dates have been announced for those cities yet. Reports suggest Tesla may first conduct a promotional tour featuring static showcases of the vehicle.

The Cybercab is powered by a single 222 hp electric motor paired with a 47.6 kWh battery, delivering an estimated driving range of up to 673 kilometers (418 miles) on a single charge, according to Tesla.
