Duorfi-Stein: ancient tomb or reception room of the gods? (8 photos)

Dwharfi Steyn is a megalithic burial ground located on the island of Hoy in the Orkney archipelago in Scotland.

Translated from an ancient Scottish dialect, the name means “dwarf’s stone.” And with this stone everything is not so simple.

The giant block is a large, almost ideally shaped rectangle of red sandstone measuring approximately 8.6 by 4 meters. The object dates back to approximately 3000 BC. e.

The square entrance, near which lies a block that served as a door, leads into a small recess, on both sides of which there are cameras. Very similar to tombs, since the dimensions of the rooms are approximately 2 by 1 meter. The interior design testifies to long, careful and scrupulous work: the walls are perfectly smooth. One part even provides something like a natural “cushion” - a fragment of untreated raised rock.

Naturally, such an ancient, clearly man-made structure gave rise to many legends. The first version after the discovery of Duorfi-Stein was its use as a hermit's cell. But the chambers are very similar to tombs; you can only enter them by bending over. And tall people will generally have to kneel.

But I really wanted a romantic hypothesis. And the Scots decided that the cave was the place of residence of gnomes - little people (hence the name).

The most plausible version is the use of this place for the burial of the leader of one of the local tribes of the Bronze Age. Which is indirectly confirmed by the same stone block used to seal the tomb.

No serious excavations have been carried out in this area. But, unfortunately, there were vandals who broke the ceiling and stole everything that was inside. After reconstruction, Duorfi-Stein was made open to visitors. Who considered it their duty to leave crude inscriptions on the stone.

One, dated 1850 and left by Captain William Mounsey, reads: “I sat up two nights and thus learned patience.” So it may well be that the history of the “dwarf stone” has not been fully studied.
