Concrete Stories (11 photos)
A World of Their Own on the Rooftops of Hong Kong
Young Reporter.
From badminton to bonsai – there are all sorts of things people do high above the densely populated streets of Kowloon, Hong Kong. Photographer Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze dedicated his series "Concrete Stories" to them.
"Concrete Stories" is a series of unstaged shots of the everyday lives of Hong Kong residents living in the older neighborhoods located in the city center. These are individual moments that add up to a larger narrative about how people use available space in a cramped urban environment.
Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze dedicated a photo project to lifestyles in old buildings, where the roof is usually unlocked and accessible to all residents. Such roofs are a bit like courtyards, but floating in the air. These buildings are rapidly disappearing. Land shortages are prompting authorities to demolish all low-rise buildings to make way for taller, more modern buildings.
