A government proposal sought to significantly restrict the driving privileges of motorists over the age of 85.



A government initiative tied to an upcoming overhaul of Italy’s highway code outlined three major restrictions for drivers aged 85 and older. Had the measure passed, senior motorists would have been banned from driving on highways, traveling more than 100 kilometers from home, and subject to a strict zero-tolerance policy on alcohol consumption behind the wheel.

Following internal political debate, Transport Minister Matteo Salvini successfully insisted on scrapping the restrictions. Instead, the ministry announced that older drivers will face more rigorous medical examinations, according to Carscoops. Senior drivers may also be required to retake their practical driving test—though not the written theory exam—in order to renew their licenses.
