Ontario authorities in Canada have abolished speedometers (2 photos)
The Canadian province of Ontario has notified residents that all automated speed cameras will be removed from roads within the next two weeks. Governor Doug Ford explained the move by saying the cameras are a "money grab," imposing fines on drivers while doing little to encourage speeding.
It is believed that the authorities' decision was influenced by the recent wave of speed camera attacks (800 in 2025), after which the local legislature promptly voted to pass a law banning the cameras.
Going forward, other methods will be used to combat speed violations, including speed bumps, traffic lights, and flashing traffic signs. Measures will be taken to optimize traffic flow through the construction of roundabouts and other traffic-calming measures.
However, not all Canadians were pleased with the relaxed enforcement, as many believe that speed cameras do help reduce accidents, a fact confirmed by research. ![]()
