Recently, an unknown guy appeared in Italy, who disabled speed cameras in several regions - and continues his rebellious acts. Local motorists nicknamed him “Flexman”, and many were even inspired by his example.
In Italy, a "Flexman" has started up - an unknown person who has been disabling speed cameras on the roads for eight months. He has one scheme: use an angle grinder to cut off the metal post on which the camera is attached. He first made headlines in May last year when he disabled his first traffic camera in the Italian region of Rovigo. Since then, he has managed to disable at least seven more cameras in Rovigo and Veneto.
Flexman commits his hooligan acts at night, usually between one and two o'clock in the morning. The guy has a controversial reputation. The Italians have dubbed him the "motorist's avenger" and many drivers see him as a sort of modern-day Robin Hood fighting the system. But for the authorities, he is a threat, causing tens of thousands of euros of damage and allegedly making roads less safe.
As local residents write, recently speed cameras have actually been installed everywhere - even where they are essentially not needed. According to the Italians, judging by the number of cameras, it seems that the authorities are more concerned about replenishing their own coffers than about preventing accidents on the roads. Flexman's actions inspired disgruntled motorists in other parts of Italy: some began blowing up cameras, others threw stones at them, and others cut down poles, like the hero himself.
Flexman could face a prison sentence of between six months and three years under Italian law. But to do this, the police must first establish his identity.
