More than 100 gold bars worth over £8million seized from couple during car stop in what police say is an unprecedented bust.
Brazilian Federal Highway Police have seized more than 100 gold bars from a car carrying influencer Suzy Alencar, her husband Bruno Mendes de Jesus and their nine-month-old son. The seizure is being called the largest in the country's history.
The officers stopped the car on the highway. According to law enforcement officer Rodrigo Magno, during the inspection they noticed counterfeit elements in the interior. This became the basis for a deeper search.
At first they found a small amount of gold, and then hidden bars in the dashboard and other hiding places. In total, 103 kg of gold were seized, which, according to the exchange rate of the Central Bank of Brazil, is estimated at 61 million reais (8.32 million pounds sterling).
Bruno was arrested on the spot, he refused to give a statement. His wife Suzy, a popular social media blogger, was released and has not yet been charged.
The police are currently investigating where the gold came from and where it was planned to be delivered.
As reported, Bruno's lawyer, Miller Rodrigues de Carvalho, said that his client is "the family's sole breadwinner," works in the mining industry and has no ties to criminal organizations. He also explained that the lack of permits makes such activities illegal, but the mining itself is vital in many regions of the country.
