A new era for Toyota sports cars

Toyota has continued to develop its sports cars, starting with the 2019 revival of the Supra in collaboration with BMW. Since then, the Gazoo Racing division has expanded significantly, creating successful models such as the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. Now, as the Supra nears the end of its life cycle, Toyota says it may develop a new sports car on its own, without the involvement of other manufacturers.

Partnership history and prospects

The brand first joined forces with Subaru to launch the GT 86 in 2012, then collaborated with BMW on the new Supra and again with Subaru on the second-generation GR 86. However, when asked recently if Toyota could go it alone, a company representative in Australia confirmed the possibility, but did not reveal specific plans for the new model.

The head of sales and marketing in Australia stated:

The answer is: we can do it ourselves. That’s what the GR is for. But despite this, we have learned a lot and will continue to learn through our partnerships. BMW makes very high-quality cars, so we are not backing down from this collaboration – it has been a useful collaboration, where we have gained invaluable experience in creating sports models.

He added:

To answer your question: Can I imagine a day when we create a fully independent Toyota Gazoo Racing sports car? Yes, yes, and yes again. Stay tuned for more.

Possible Developments

The representative did not provide clear guidance on whether the new model would be the next generation Supra or an entirely new development. However, he noted that the Supra has a strong legacy and you can never say never about reviving the brand.

Interestingly, recent reports indicate that Toyota has already approved the development of a new generation of Supra, which could appear as early as 2027. In addition, there are rumors about the revival of the Celica name in the form of a GR model with a mid-engine, all-wheel drive and a capacity of about 400 hp.

The development of Gazoo Racing demonstrates how car companies can combine their own innovations with the experience of partners to create unique products. Independent development of new sports models will allow Toyota to fully control the technical characteristics and design, which could lead to even more impressive results. Growing competition in the sports car market is stimulating manufacturers to constantly improve technology and expand the model range.
