A very rare McLaren F1 from the garage of the Sultan of Brunei will be auctioned off (7 photos)
One of the rarest examples of the iconic McLaren F1 is up for sale in Abu Dhabi. According to RM Sotheby's, the auction house handling the sale, this supercar can be considered unique for a number of reasons: for example, it was originally built for the Sultan of Brunei's collection and later rebuilt using an extremely rarely used program. Furthermore, at various points in its life, the car bore the signatures of two Formula 1 champions. The supercar is expected to fetch over $21 million.
This car is the 14th of 64 road-going McLaren F1s ever built. The coupe, originally built in 1994, featured a bright yellow exterior and a black leather interior. In 2006, at the behest of its then-owner, the car was sent to the McLaren factory, where it underwent a major overhaul.
Specifically, the coupe was equipped with a High Downforce Kit, an aerodynamic package that increased downforce and was used on a handful of road-going F1 cars. It included a fixed wing, a larger front bumper with a splitter, and track-style air intakes. Furthermore, this supercar received a modernized interior, redesigned to F1 LM specifications, a new exhaust, and custom wheels, while the body was repainted white. It is said that over half a million dollars were spent on the rebuild.
On March 12, 1996, Michael Schumacher signed the supercar's door sill. After the car's reconstruction, the signature disappeared, but in 2007, Lewis Hamilton signed the car.
The supercar has just over 22,000 kilometers on the clock and is said to be in excellent condition.
