A child was given wine to drink in a California restaurant (4 photos)
A 2-year-old girl was accidentally served wine instead of apple juice at a California establishment. The toddler had a high blood alcohol level and was hospitalized.
Noemi Valencia and her husband were having dinner with their daughter at Fujiyama Japanese Restaurant in Salinas on Saturday. Suddenly, the girl became ill.
"She was swaying, falling, pressing herself against the walls, couldn't lift her head, and was slurring her words," her mother said.
The woman looked into the glass of juice, which was covered with a lid, sniffed the brown-red liquid and quickly determined that it was alcohol.
The frightened parents took their daughter to the hospital, where they learned that the alcohol level in her blood was 0.12 ppm.
A restaurant manager has admitted that a waiter mistakenly poured house wine that was labeled as "apple juice."
Valencia has warned other parents: "Try what your kids are being served."
And she has called on Fujiyama workers: "Please take all necessary precautions and label them correctly. This will help prevent similar situations in the future."
Luckily, the baby recovered quickly.
Police are investigating the incident: "The Alcohol Beverage Control Department is aware of the incident and is working with authorities to investigate."
