20 Photos of Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow, Young and Head Over Heels in Love (21 photos)
In the mid-90s, Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt were one of Hollywood’s ultimate golden couples. With matching blonde hair, blue eyes, and striking good looks, they seemed like a match made in heaven. From 1994 to 1997, the pair were inseparable, and fans everywhere were eagerly waiting for them to tie the knot—a wedding that, ultimately, never came to pass.
Brad Pitt fell head over heels for Paltrow on the set of Se7en. Accepting his Golden Globe for 12 Monkeys in 1996, he famously thanked Gwyneth from the stage, calling her his “angel” and the “love of my life.” By December of that same year, he had popped the question.
“I take the institution of marriage extremely seriously,” Gwyneth revealed in an interview at the time. “Nobody in my family has ever been divorced, and nobody in his family has either. We’ve been together for quite a while, so this isn’t some rash decision.”
However, by June 1997, the engagement was called off, and the couple went their separate ways.
“If it’s not meant to be, it’s not meant to be,” the actress reflected a year later, in 1998, when asked about the breakup.
By 2015, speaking on Howard Stern’s radio show, she opened up about the split with even greater candor:
“I was such a kid—I was twenty-two when we met. It took me until I was forty to get my head together and figure things out. You can’t make a wise decision when you’re twenty-two years old… I just wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me.”
During the same interview, Paltrow admitted that her father, famed TV director Bruce Paltrow, was “devastated” when she and Brad called it quits.
“My father loved him like a son,” she shared. “And I was deeply in love. He was wonderful and so sweet. I mean, he was Brad Pitt!”
