Rare 1964 Porsche 904 GTS set to sell for $2 million (45 photos)
Auction house Sotheby's will put up a Porsche 904 GTS sports car, produced in 1964, for a closed auction. The model is known for its victories in various races, and this particular example also took first places, and among its owners, according to unconfirmed reports, was the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas. For one of only 108 copies built, they expect to earn from 1.8 to 2.2 million dollars.
Porsche designed the 904 with GT racing in mind, but the model was road legal. The steel chassis in its design was combined with a fiberglass body, and a specially designed one and a half liter engine developed up to 180 hp. In 1964 and 1965, the 904 won races at Spa, Sebring, Le Mans and the Nürburgring, as well as the Targa Florio and various rally circuits, including Monte Carlo.
The example that will be offered for sale was assembled for a customer from California, and therefore competed in local racing series - for example, it won victories in some races of the SCCA and USRRC series. Periodically changing owners, the car moved from the USA to Japan and back. In 1970, the original engine was replaced with an engine from the then 911, but now the 904 is equipped with a rare 2.0-liter Typ 587/3 power unit, which Porsche installed in racing versions of the 904.
The auction house claims that the car is well preserved and has an almost fully documented history since production.
