In August this year, the private British auction house Bonhams will put up for auction the only example of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that the Pininfarina studio has transformed it from sedan to coupe. The car is not in the best condition, but due to its uniqueness, they plan to earn up to 600 thousand for it dollars.
Mercedes-Benz itself never produced the 300 SEL in coupe body. However, it is believed that a certain Dutch industrialist contacted the company with a request to build a two-door modification on that same platform. Mercedes-Benz refused him, and then he handed over Bought a 1969 sedan from Pininfarina.
Italian designers designed for him a completely new body with a different design of the front and rear, as well as new pillars, thanks to which the coupe received a more dynamic silhouette. New the panels are made by hand from steel.
There were no changes in technology: 300 SEL Coupe complete the same eight-cylinder engine with a volume of 6.3 liters, which developed 250 hp
According to some reports, the construction of a unique car cost customer in 400 thousand guilders (slightly less than a million dollars modern standards). At the same time, he himself almost did not use the car, preferring to ride with a driver. Coupe is offered for sale "as is" - with traces of wear on the body, scratches and rust.
About 6.5 thousand sedans 300 SEL were produced, and they also considered a collector's item. For example, last spring a copy that belonged to the famous actor and racing driver Steve McQueen, offered at auction 164 thousand dollars. However, the seller amount seemed too modest, and the deal did not take place.
