Some critics believe that the sculpture, which embodies a man's dream of what a woman's body should look like, is unlikely to help Danish women accept their bodies.

A scandal has erupted in Denmark around the sculpture Den Store Havfrue (The Big Mermaid). It's all about her large and beautiful breasts, which drive men and all the guardians of equality crazy, considering the marble woman the embodiment of the objectification of the female body. The Danish Palaces and Culture Agency will soon ask the authorities to dismantle the 14-ton sculpture from Fort Dragør in Copenhagen due to the discontent of local activists.

Politiken art critic Mathias Krieger called the mermaid sculpture ugly and pornographic, while journalist Sorin Gottfredsen wrote in the Berlingske newspaper that "erecting a statue that embodies a man's cherished dream of what a woman should look like is unlikely to help many women accept their bodies." She also added that many residents find the sculpture "vulgar, unpoetic and undesirable" because "we are suffocated by powerful bodies in a public place."

The creator of the sculpture, Peter Bech, disagrees with the criticism of his creation and does not even understand why the mermaid's breasts are considered large. He stated that the breasts of the marble female figure are "proportionate" to its scale.

As noted by the media, in 2006, another one, the "Big Mermaid", was installed on the Langelinie pier in Copenhagen next to the "Little Mermaid". The small bronze sculpture (also bare-breasted) has never caused outrage among people. In 2018, Peter Bech's creation was moved to Fort Dragen due to complaints, but now the Palaces and Culture Agency has intervened, so it is likely that the "vulgar" mermaid will be removed from sight for good.

"The Little Mermaid"

As for Peter Bech, he previously stated that he created his sculpture in response to comments from tourists who thought that the Little Mermaid, inspired by the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, was too small. He also added that the residents of Drager tell him that they like his sculpture. That's why he intends to fight for it and wants it to stay in the city.
