What is this thing: the strangest finds. Issue 185

16 February 2024

The time has come for a new series of our irregular column “explain to me what this thing is?” Let's see what curious "seekers" found in their attics, garages and flea markets. We ask you all to fast.

“I have a fantasy... quickly tell me what it is!”

These are ancient blinders that were put on the eyes of bulls or horses and limited their lateral vision.

“What is this old piece of wood covered with leather?”

This old instrument was invented by Paul Riessman for midwives and was used to apply pressure to the abdominal aorta to prevent complications after childbirth.

“I can’t imagine what this is. But they gave it to us as a wedding gift.”

This is a miniature wedding vase made of sterling silver, the kind that used to be often given to newlyweds. One spout of the wedding vase symbolizes the husband, the other - the wife. And the handle in the middle represents the unity that husband and wife will achieve when they come together on their wedding day.

“It’s not a toilet, is it? Say it’s not.”

This thing is used for washing ducks.

“We got it for free. A cute, but very strange ceramic piece.”

This is a porcelain brush holder.

"It's probably some kind of kitchen gadget, right?"

This thing attaches to the bottom of the cane and flips over for use on slippery surfaces.

"Found this strange ceramic... jar in the attic?"

This is a ceramic heating pad.

"Is this a bra? If so, then the holes seem... out of place."

This is a posture corrector.

“I won’t even pretend that I tried to understand what it is. Experts, your way out.”

This is an old hearing aid. The tie clip contains a transistor that connects to the hearing aid cord.

"These things are made of wood, the material in the center is like burlap, and the straps are leather. Who knows what they are?"

These are old dog sledding snowshoes.

“What kind of spoon is this with a metal plate and a hole?”

This is an antique spoon for men with mustaches.

“Funny cowards. I probably won’t try them on.”

These cloths are used as baby diapers. The loop ties are needed to hold the “structure” on the child.
