Stone Forest in Bulgaria, older than the pyramids (19 photos + 1 video)

Just 18 kilometers from bustling Varna, on the road to Sofia, lies a place that looks like a set from a movie about another planet. Imagine a desert of fine sand, dotted with dozens of stone giants. Some resemble petrified guardians, others giant mushrooms, or the ruins of an ancient temple.

Locals call this place "Pobiti Kamani" - "driven stones." And this name perfectly captures the essence. From the outside, it truly looks as if someone has driven hundreds of hollow stone pipes into the ground with a giant hammer.

Some of these columns reach 10 meters in height and 3 meters in diameter. They have no foundation, stand on loose sand, and most are hollow inside, filled with sand. Scientists have puzzled over their origin for nearly 200 years, since their first description in 1829. There are about 15 theories, ranging from coral reefs to alien intervention.

Today, the most convincing hypothesis is that 50 million years ago, when Eastern Europe was covered by sea, methane bubbles began seeping from the seabed. They cemented the limestone around them, creating these tubular structures. When the water receded, the sand eroded, and these fossilized geysers emerged to the surface. Despite its uniqueness, the site remains in limbo. In 2011, Pobiti Kamani was included on the UNESCO tentative list as a natural phenomenon. However, the site has yet to receive the coveted status.

However, in 2025, an unexpected initiative emerged: Bulgarian scientists proposed reclassifying the Stone Forest as an archaeological site rather than a natural one. The reason is that traces of ancient human settlements dating back to the Mesolithic period (10th-7th millennia BC) were discovered in the area, and archaeologists now want to protect the cultural layer along with the geological columns. While the procedure is still being developed, the unique Stone Forest still awaits its rightful place as a fully-fledged human heritage site.
