Meet the rare sea wolves that live near the ocean and swim in it for hours (17 photos)

You're probably thinking that this couldn't be true, since we're used to wolves living in forests and having nothing to do with the ocean. But along the Pacific coast of British Columbia lives a population of unusual wolves.







"Thanks to DNA research, we know that these wolves are genetically distinct from their continental relatives," says Ian McAllister, a photographer who has been studying these animals for nearly two decades.

These wolves swim from island to island, hunting marine animals. Their record is swimming in an archipelago 7.5 miles from land.








90 percent of their diet consists of ocean food, and a quarter of that is salmon.









McAllister captured the magic of these animals through his captivating photographs.
