American mycologist Sam Shoemaker sailed several dozen kilometers across the open ocean in a kayak made entirely of mycelium. The technology for creating the boat was radically different from conventional methods: the man literally grew it.
Having placed the tinder fungus mycelium in a kayak mold, he let nature do its work - after six weeks, the organic material repeated all the contours of the hull. After three months of drying, the 48 kg kayak was ready.
In 12 hours, he covered 42 km from Catalina Island to San Pedro. During this time, he encountered seasickness and met a whale. However, both the experimental boat and its creator successfully passed the test.
Shoemaker wants his work to demonstrate the potential of mushrooms as an environmentally friendly replacement for plastic.

However, it is not yet possible to mass-produce such products: they are too long and difficult to make, and they are still inferior in strength to regular factory-made boats.
