Underwater Waterfall Off the Coast of Mauritius: A Brilliant Illusion of Nature (2 photos)

Many people, looking at photographs of the coast of Mauritius, are amazed by the incredible sight – it seems as if water is plunging into a bottomless abyss right in the ocean. However, this is nothing more than a captivating optical illusion created by nature itself. In fact, no waterfall exists underwater. This effect is caused by the unique topography of the seabed: off the coast of the island lies a shallow platform that then drops off abruptly, passing into a deep ocean trench. Currents constantly wash sand and silt from the shallows toward this cliff. Passing through the water column, the sediment creates a visual illusion, imitating a stream of water falling into a deep abyss. Thus, what we perceive as a powerful waterfall is in fact merely a play of light and the movement of sand, masterfully concealing the profound difference in elevation on the ocean floor.
