Mercedes-Benz unveiled the updated GLE and GLE Coupe (44 photos)
The German company unveiled restyled versions of the GLE, including a coupe version. Visually, the fresh crossovers are easily distinguished by their front end, with a redesigned radiator grille featuring a scattering of three-pointed stars, and their lighting: similar star motifs are visible in both the headlights and taillights. The cars also received new mirrors and different wheel designs.
Inside, the redesigned dashboard immediately catches the eye. The dashboard now houses the massive MBUX Superscreen, consisting of three 12.3-inch screens. As a bonus, a more modern steering wheel and a redesigned center console have been added, and the trim range has been expanded with new material combinations. The company highlighted the introduction of a virtual assistant with AI elements, the addition of a head-up display with augmented reality, and the ability to use a smartphone as a key.
The GLE's engine lineup has been expanded with a 4.0-liter V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, familiar from several previous models, particularly the S-Class. This unit produces 537 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. The GLE 580's powertrain, like almost all others in the updated GLE lineup, is a mild hybrid with a 48-volt starter-generator.
Simpler options include the GLE 450 4Matic with a 3.0-liter inline-six producing 375 horsepower, the GLE 350 4Matic with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 255 horsepower, and the plug-in hybrid GLE 450e or 500e, depending on the market, which also uses a 3.0-liter inline-six. The gasoline-electric SUV produces 429 horsepower and can travel up to 106 kilometers (66 mi) on electric power alone.
The company hasn't forgotten about the AMG version of the GLE either. It carries the index 53 and will be available as both a mild hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. The former is paired with a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 449 horsepower and a 23-horsepower starter-generator, while the latter, in addition to the same internal combustion engine, has a 184-horsepower electric motor. The latter's electric range ranges from 88 to 93 km.
The crossover's suspension has also been updated: all suspension options, including the air suspension, have been retuned for a sportier feel. The E-Active Body Control system with active stabilizers is available, allowing for the damping of longitudinal and lateral vibrations. The system analyzes the road conditions up to 1,000 times per second.
