Root bridges in India (6 photos)

A single bridge can take 15–30 years to build, but it can then last for hundreds of years and even strengthen over time. The most famous examples are in the Cherrapunjee area, where heavy rains quickly destroyed traditional bridges.

Today, these "living bridges" are considered one of the most unusual forms of bioengineering and attract tourists from around the world. Some, such as the double-decker bridge near the village of Nongriat, can support dozens of people at a time and have become a symbol of harmony between man and nature.
