14 Children of Celebrities Who Publicly Broke Their Relationships with Their Parents (15 photos)
Some celebrity children inherited their parents' talents, others their wealth, and still others deep-rooted traumas. From Angelina Jolie's icy confrontation with her father to Brooklyn Beckham's quiet estrangement from the family, these children strive to free themselves from their complicated relationships with their parents. Even Prince Harry stepped down from royal duties to escape the palace drama.
1. Frances Bean Cobain
Frances was born to Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, and her life was turbulent from the very beginning.
Soon after her birth, scandal erupted. In 1992, Vanity Fair exposed Courtney's drug use during pregnancy. As a result, she was stripped of custody of her daughter. However, the investigation soon closed, and Frances returned home.
The baby was only 20 months old when her father, the Nirvana frontman, committed suicide.
In 2003, Courtney again lost custody of her daughter after being arrested for breaking into her then-boyfriend's home. She briefly spent time in rehab and soon regained custody.
And in 2009, Frances herself filed for a restraining order against her mother, claiming a fight broke out between them.
"She lives on Xanax, Adderall, Sonata, Abilify, sugar, and cigarettes," the girl complained. "She rarely eats. She often falls asleep with a cigarette, and I'm afraid she'll start a fire (this has already happened three times)."
Frances never felt satisfied with the enormous fortune she inherited from her father.
On the RuPaul: What's the Tee? podcast in 2019, she said, "It's like a huge loan that I'll never be free of. I have an almost detached, or guilty, relationship with it. I feel like I'm receiving money from a stranger, not to mention that I didn't earn it."
Over time, she mended her relationship with her mother, calling this phase "the era of balance."
"When my mom is healthy and happy, she is one of the most inspiring, beautiful, intelligent, and kind people I've ever met," Frances admitted.
2. Elle King
Elle King, born Tanner Schneider, decided to change her name to distance herself from her father, Rob Schneider.
In 2023, the singer gave an interview to People: "I've always strived to be my own person. I've never wanted to take on debt and have worked hard for my family and myself. I want to build my life the way I want and be confident that I can do it."
She grew up in Ohio with her mother, London King, and barely saw her father. "He wasn't in my life. He got married, had a child, and we didn't talk," the singer shared.
The girl complained that her father sent her to "fat camp," and she doesn't want to be associated with him.
Last year, Rob Schneider spoke about his relationship with his daughter on Tucker Carlson's podcast.
"Ally, I love you. I'm sorry I wasn't the father you needed in my 20s. I hope you can forgive me for all my mistakes," he said.
The actor admitted to feeling guilty: "I love her and want her to be happy. I take responsibility for not being the kind of parent to her that I am now to my children. She didn't get that, and I missed out on a lot."
3. Suri Cruise
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes separated more than ten years ago, when their daughter Suri was six years old. The Mission: Impossible star and his daughter have not spoken since.
A year ago, the 19-year-old dropped her father's last name and introduced herself as Suri Noel at her graduation. The fact is that "Noel" is Katie Holmes' middle name. This move is a tribute to her mother and an attempt to maintain her individuality.
4. Kate Hudson
Kate Hudson often speaks of her warm relationship with her mother, actress Goldie Hawn, and her longtime partner, Kurt Russell. However, she admitted that she barely knew her biological father, Bill Hudson, who left the family in 1982.
In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning last year, Kate said, "I don't really have any relationship with him."
In 2015, her brother Oliver became the center of media attention when he posted a message on Father's Day wishing Bill a solitary holiday.
Bill stated that after this incident, he no longer considered Oliver and Kate his children.
"Now I'm telling them, 'I'm setting you free.' I have three children of my own, and I no longer consider Oliver and Kate to be that... Oliver is now dead to me. So is Kate," he told the Daily Mail.
However, Kate and Oliver have managed to forgive their father and have even become closer to him in recent years.
"Things are improving," the actress said on CBS in 2014. "But, you know, I... don't expect too much. I just want my father to be happy."
5. Miley Cyrus
Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus announced their divorce in 2022. The family split affected Miley's relationship with her father and brother.
In 2024, the singer won her first Grammy Award, but failed to mention her father in her acceptance speech, causing backlash.
"He's tried to reach out to Miley multiple times to congratulate her on the award," an insider said. "The kids are separated, but friends are hoping for a reconciliation. Miley and Billy Ray are at odds, and Miley is very close to her mother and supports her."
Miley shared that her family went through a "dark decade."
"Half of us weren't in touch for a while, but we worked it out," she admitted to Monica Lewinsky on a podcast.
6. Brooklyn Beckham
David and Victoria Beckham's son stopped communicating with his parents after their marriage. The split occurred at Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz's wedding in 2022.
First, singer Marc Anthony called Victoria "the most beautiful woman in the room" from the stage, and then there was a mother-son dance. Brooklyn's fiancée ran out in tears.
In October, it was revealed that Brooklyn wasn't trying to mend his relationship with his family.
According to a source close to the couple, Brooklyn is completely focused on a calm and harmonious life with Nicola. They have created their own world and are enjoying it. The couple prefers to let things resolve themselves, without unnecessary effort or interference.
7. Abigail Hopkins
Abigail Hopkins contemplated suicide due to her difficult relationship with her father, Anthony Hopkins.
"I was on the verge of suicide," she told The Telegraph in 2006, reflecting on her teenage years.
"It was the worst period of my life. I completely numbed my feelings with alcohol and amphetamines. The main reason was that my father barely communicated with me. I was angry and deeply sad."
Anthony Hopkins left his first wife, British actress Petronella Barker, and their one-year-old daughter, Abigail.
"I didn't keep in touch with Petronella and Abigail for several years after the divorce, except for financial support," the Oscar winner wrote in his memoir, "We Made It, Baby," published last month.
"It's the saddest thing in my life and my biggest regret. But I'm sure it would have been much worse for everyone if I had stayed," he said.
When she was nine, he tried to atone for it, but later recalled their awkward encounter.
"Abigail never seemed to forgive me for leaving the family. I can't blame her for that," the actor said.
She admitted, "We were never really close." Despite bit parts in his films "Shadowlands" and "The Remains of the Day," their relationship remained frosty.
Anthony admitted, "I will always regret hurting her when I left the family, although to this day I believe I had no choice."
8. Emma Roberts
Emma Roberts remained silent for many years about her difficult relationship with her father, actor Eric Roberts.
Eric revealed that his substance abuse led to him losing custody: "The worst consequence of my addiction is losing my daughter. I was high when she was born. That explains everything."
Her father is proud of his daughter's performance and notes that she has no formal training as an actress, but learned through practice. He is pleased to see her develop in the profession.
9. Angelina Jolie
After Jon Voight spoke of his daughter's "mental problems" in 2002, Angelina Jolie decided not to publicly discuss the reasons for their difficult relationship.
"I would have liked to have had a warm and loving relationship with my father," she said. "But after many years, I realized I couldn't stay close to him."
That same year, Jolie officially dropped her surname, "Voight," which she had borne since birth.
"My father and I don't speak," she admitted in a 2004 interview with Premiere magazine.
At the same time, the actress revealed that her childhood was filled with tears and screams.
Many years later, after her divorce from Brad Pitt, Angelina seems to have mended her relationship with her father: "He understands perfectly well that my children need a grandfather. He knows: don't force them to play with you. Just be a great grandfather who is creative, entertains them, tells stories, and reads books."
10. Tori Spelling
Tori Spelling has always had a difficult relationship with her mother, Candy. In 2006, Candy blamed her daughter for her father's death.
"My daughter decided not to communicate with my husband, me, or our son. This went on for four or five years," the elderly woman complained. "This is what caused my husband's death. After that, he lost the will to live."
However, Tori's memories of meeting her father a few weeks before his death were quite different: "That day, Dad met the love of my life. He kissed me deeply, and we said we loved each other."
"I love my mother. I always have, and I know she loves me too. There's no animosity between us. We just didn't always understand each other," Tori admitted.
11. Brad Pitt's Children
Brad Pitt's six children—Maddox (24), Pax (21), Zahara (20), Shiloh (19), and twins Vivienne and Knox (17)—have become estranged from him following his bitter divorce from Angelina Jolie.
According to Us Weekly, the Fight Club star has been trying to reconnect with his children.
A source said he sees his teenage twins "periodically" but has a "strained" relationship with his other children.
Last year, 17-year-old Vivienne dropped the Pitt name from her name in the playbill for the musical "The Outsiders."
"The kids clearly don't want anything to do with Brad. This really hurts him," the publications write.
12. Hailey Bieber
Hailey Bieber said she started her own family because she had become estranged from her family in recent years.
"At this point in my life, I'm not very close to my family because I feel very independent." "When I think about my childhood, I have such fond, wonderful memories," she told W Magazine last July.
The daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin and graphic designer Kennya Deodato, she began her modeling career at 17. She moved to New York to become financially independent and self-sufficient.
Hailey's relationship with her parents deteriorated when she became pregnant. She didn't want them to interfere with the upbringing of her grandson, Jack.
13. Prince Harry
In 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from their royal duties and have since been addressed as "His or Her Royal Highness." Prince Harry, who remains fifth in line to the throne, also renounced his military titles. He currently lives in California with his wife and children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
In May of this year, Harry stated that he "would like to reconcile" with his royal family and did not want to quarrel any further because he "doesn't know how much longer my father has left."
He admitted that there had been "so many disagreements" between him and some relatives, but he had "forgiven them."
"Some of my family members will, of course, never forgive me for writing the [autobiographical] book, and they will never forgive me for many other things. But I would very much like reconciliation. I see no point in continuing the conflict, because life is such a precious gift," Prince Harry said.
14. Marquis Jackson
"Since $6,700 is a lot of money, someone tell my dad I'll pay him $6,700 for just 24 hours of his time so we can do everything I wanted to do as a kid," the son of rapper 50 Cent wrote in 2022.
Marquis Jackson can't forgive his father for leaving the family and paying so little child support.
"$6,700 a month in New York... Do the math. We're talking about a Forbes list guy." "$81,000 a year is not a lot of money," he said.
Over the years, the "Candy Shop" singer's relationship with his son became so strained that his father admitted he wouldn't care if his son got hit by a bus.
When Marquis posed for a photo with the son of Supreme McGriff (the same man who hired the hitman who shot Fifty nine times), the rapper responded: "If these little niggas get hit by a bus, my day will be pretty good."
"I didn't expect success to cost me my firstborn, but that's just the way it is," 50 Cent later said.
