Not all licks are equally useful: how a dog brought a pensioner to sepsis (2 photos + 1 video)
We all love our furry and tailed friends madly. They bring joy and comfort to the house, make us smile and even help us cope with loneliness. But sometimes it is this love that can lead to unexpected troubles.
A tragedy has recently occurred in Britain that makes all pet owners think. 83-year-old June Baxter got a cut on her leg. It would seem that this is a common thing - we have all been pricked or scratched at least once. But granddaughter Caitlan Allin decided to play it safe and visited her grandmother, taking her dog with her.
The dog loved his grandmother and, overjoyed at the meeting, began to cuddle up to the point that his saliva got on the wound. But no one paid attention to it. After all, we remember that dogs lick their wounds, which means that nothing terrible can happen.
The next day, June felt unwell and was soon hospitalized. Despite the doctors' efforts, the woman died of septic shock, an extremely serious condition caused by inflammation and infection. Analysis showed that the wound contained the bacterium Pasteurella multocida, which is commonly found in the mouths of domestic animals, including dogs.
Scientists have shown what cats and dogs' saliva actually hides.
This does not mean that pets are walking dangers! On the contrary, millions of people love and keep dogs and cats without any problems. It is just worth remembering that even the most affectionate pets can carry bacteria that can lead to serious complications, especially if there is damage to the skin.
