Land Rover Discovery that participated in the Camel Trophy was auctioned (19 photos)
In the 90s, Land Rover held annual Camel Trophy marathons. The SUVs for participation were built by the company itself in small quantities, so they are considered a rarity these days. Sometimes they go on sale. For example, this Land Rover Discovery, which the Moroccan team drove in the 1997 Camel Trophy in Mongolia, sold for €42,000.
The 1997 Camel Trophy was held in Mongolia and, partly because of this, was very different from most previous competitions. It included several additional challenges, including canoeing and cycling. Therefore, along with the car, the buyer will also receive a canoe and a Lee Cougan bicycle.
As a result, the Land Rover Discovery 300Tdi built specifically for this event are very well equipped to be used as vehicles for such outdoor activities. A total of 20 cars were produced.
The Discovery 300Tdi is powered by Land Rover's 2,495cc inline-four diesel engine producing 111 PS. at 4000 rpm. The Defender 110 300Tdi served as escort vehicles.
Discovery's special equipment for the Camel Trophy included a roll cage, underbody and steering protection, modified electrics, winch, snorkel, full trunk with ladder and additional lights, steel front protection, additional fuel tanks, Garmin navigation and a number of other equipment.
The 16-inch five-spoke alloy wheels are shod with Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires. All 20 examples were finished in the Sandglow Desert color scheme and featured beige semi-vinyl and cloth upholstery with black accents.
The car also features a contrasting blue hood decal, Mongolian mountain range decals on the door sills, sponsor decals and Moroccan flag decals on the hood and rear windows.
The seller describes the vehicle as follows: “This Land Rover Discovery is an original and very rare example of an off-road vehicle that was built to expedition specifications and used by the Moroccan team in the 1997 Camel Trophy competition in Mongolia. One of only 20 examples produced for the 1997 Camel Trophy.”
