Iraqi Tribe Recaptures Oil Tanker from Somali Pirates (2 Photos + 2 Videos)
A story straight out of an action movie unfolded off the coast of Africa a few days ago. Somali pirates managed to hijack the crude oil tanker Sibu 1 in the Gulf of Aden en route from the UAE to Europe, promptly demanding a massive ransom from the owners. The raiders were clearly banking on drawn-out, grueling negotiations, but they overlooked one critical detail.
It turns out the vessel belongs to an influential businessman from Iraq’s Al-Shganba tribe.
The ship was indeed seized off the coast of Yemen and steered toward Somalia. The tanker itself has quite a background: flying the Eritrean flag, it is under U.S. sanctions for operating as part of the "shadow fleet" hauling Iranian petroleum products. A multinational crew of 20 was on board—mostly Indian nationals, alongside Syrians, Sudanese, and one Iraqi citizen.
With far too much money at stake, the owners had no intention of waiting around for help from international navies or the UN.
Tribal representatives swiftly reached out to authorities in Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region, coordinating a plan with the local maritime police. Men working for the tanker’s ownership group didn't just work the phones—they headed out into the field themselves to rescue the crew and reclaim the ship.
The raid was executed with sheer audacity. To avoid raising alarms, the Iraqis and Somali security forces boarded ordinary civilian craft, slipped up to the tanker undetected, and launched an assault. A fierce firefight erupted, dragging on for five full hours.
In the end, the pirates were routed. One attacker was killed on the spot, five more were wounded, and fifteen others—realizing the game was up—threw in the towel and surrendered. The most unruly among them were locked in a cage to reflect on their choices.
The entire multinational crew was rescued safe and sound, and the tanker is once again firmly under the control of its rightful owners.
