Fiery barrage in Guatemala: tourists nearly turned to charcoal during the eruption of the Fuego volcano
A group of thrill-seekers who decided to get close to the crater of Guatemala’s awakening Fuego volcano found themselves caught in a harrowing, life-or-death ordeal. Right in the middle of their reckless ascent, the giant suddenly entered a phase of active eruption, raining red-hot chunks of magma down upon the slopes. Massive, blazing projectiles shot from the crater at breakneck speed—like artillery fire—exploding with a dull roar just meters away from the panic-stricken climbers. Judging by footage shared on social media, the tourists were saved from certain, agonizing death only by a miracle and a sudden kick-in of their survival instincts. Cynical guides simply shrug, noting that Fuego is considered one of the planet’s most active and unpredictable volcanoes—and pointing out that a cozy sofa back home would certainly never treat them so treacherously.
