How to change your race or gain 15 kilograms in a few hours (22 photos)
For their roles, actors lose and gain extreme amounts of weight, get tattoos, shave their heads, and spend hours in makeup. We found 20 photos of actors who are simply unrecognizable after makeup.
Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, X-Men.
Michael Chiklis, "Fantastic Four."
Johnny Depp and Edward Scissorhands.
Dustin Hoffman and Captain Hook.
Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool.
Ron Perlman as Hellboy.
Hugh Keays-Byrne in "Mad Max: Fury Road."
Dave Bautista in "Guardians of the Galaxy."
Doug Bradley in "Hellraiser." It took makeup artists six hours each time to get the needles perfectly in place.
Gwyneth Paltrow in "Shallow Hal." The actress had to wear a padded bodysuit weighing over 22 pounds and apply latex makeup. Paltrow says she felt the impact of the treatment of her character: "People avoided eye contact with me, and some even tried not to look in my direction."
Here's what it looked like.
William Kircher is one of the dwarves who transformed into characters in The Hobbit trilogy. His character has a broken axe in his forehead. Because The Hobbit was filmed in higher resolution than typical films, the edges of the prosthetic makeup had to be masked with compression material used in astronautics.
Angelina Jolie in Maleficent. The sharp cheekbones, the hump on the nose, and the pointed ears were created using silicone prosthetics. The molars were also lengthened and sharpened for the role.
John Hurt in the 1980 film "The Elephant Man." The application of the 15-piece prosthetic took 12 hours, and after a day of filming, Hurt was so exhausted that he needed another 24 hours to recover.
Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf in "La Vie en Rose." To achieve a portrait resemblance to the singer, Cotillard shaved her eyebrows and part of her forehead, and makeup took five hours each day of filming.
John Matuszak in The Goonies.
Eddie Murphy as the Chinese Mr. Wong in Norbit (we saw another amazing transformation from the actor in The Nutty Professor).
Benicio del Toro, "The Wolfman."
Charlize Theron in "Monster." The actress didn't just get away with makeup—she also had to gain 14 kilograms.
Emma Thompson in the comedy "Nanny McPhee." The actress had to carry a prop cane with her to premieres—otherwise, children definitely wouldn't have recognized that she was the same woman as in the film.
Selma Blair in the comedy "A Dirty Shame."
