The 76-year-old Mercedes that drove Marilyn Monroe will go under the hammer (9 photos)
This rare car has been restored and has just over 70,000 kilometers on the clock. 
Iconic Auctioneers will auction off a rare 1950 Mercedes-Benz 170 S (W136) in mid-May. The car is remarkable not only for its restored condition but also for its history: its current owner discovered that the famous actress and Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe drove it in 1956. Despite all the rarity's virtues, the expected price for it is relatively modest – between 120,000 and 160,000 pounds (between 162,000 and 216,000 dollars).
The current owner acquired the Mercedes-Benz 170 S over ten years ago. The car came with a set of suitcases adorned with the MM monogram in a distinctive font. A similar monogram is also found on the dashboard. Trying to figure out what the abbreviation refers to, the owner traced the car's history and discovered that it was imported to Greece in February 1956.
The owner of this rare car managed to find an insurance certificate for the car in the archives, covering the period from February to August 1956, signed by Marilyn Monroe. Based on this, it was concluded that the famous actress used this Mercedes during her travels across Europe, and in particular Greece.
The auctioneers claim that a notarized certificate will be included with the car. Restoration work was undertaken after its connection to the celebrity was established, entrusting the restoration to prominent British specialists in vintage Mercedes-Benzes. The car was essentially disassembled and reassembled, using parts from original suppliers or manufactured from scratch according to authentic drawings. Former engineers from Sindelfingen served as consultants.
The Mercedes-Benz 170 S was considered one of the company's luxury models in the early 1950s, targeting wealthy businessmen and corporate executives. This example is equipped with a 1.7-liter inline-four producing 52 hp.
