Our reality is a real joker. Sometimes it comes up with such captivating plots that Hollywood can only quietly sob in a corner with envy.

Some stories are unbelievable, but they're documented. This collection includes a woman who predicted the era of fake news back in the 1970s, an entire species of lizards that don't need males, and a mysterious Hollywood director who doesn't actually exist.

1. The Last Dinosaur

The dinosaur that lived closest to the mass extinction was Triceratops, which lived just a few thousand years before the mass extinction at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary. No younger dinosaur fossils have yet been found.

2. Giant Bird

A pelican's body length can exceed 180 centimeters.

3. The Emperor's Unexpected Decisions

The Roman Emperor Diocletian attempted to limit the social mobility of peasants and soldiers in order to protect the functions and economy of the Roman state, despite the fact that he himself was the son of a freed slave and a soldier.

4. A Unique Movement

The "Desert Fathers" were Christian hermit monks from Roman Egypt who began leading an ascetic life in the desert in the 3rd century. Paul of Thebes is often considered the first hermit, but the founder of the movement was Anthony the Great, who went into the desert around 270–271. They led a truly ascetic life, dedicated to prayer, fasting, silence, and severe self-denial in the desert.

5. Female Territory

The New Mexican whiptail lizard is a species of lizard native to New Mexico and Arizona in the southwestern United States and Chihuahua in northern Mexico. They reproduce by parthenogenesis, meaning the embryo develops without fertilization. The species is exclusively female, as they do not require males for reproduction.

6. The Non-Existent Director

A ghost director named Alan Smithee has existed in Hollywood for over 50 years. He never lived, but is credited on more than 20 films.

His name appears in the credits when the real director wants to relinquish his credit due to creative differences or studio interference. Alan Smithee was also credited on extended TV versions of cult films like Dune or Scent of a Woman if the final cut was made without the real director's involvement. Since 2000, the Guild has discontinued the use of this pseudonym, deeming it too well-known, and now uses other, less recognizable names for these purposes.

7. The Gift of a Writer

Peter Pan author James Barrie bequeathed all rights to the boy who never grew up to a children's hospital, so that it would never suffer poverty.

Before his death in 1937, Barrie donated the rights to the play and books about Peter Pan to London's Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. For decades, royalties from countless productions, books, and films have been a major source of funding, helping to care for thousands of children.

8. The Woman Who Recorded Everything

Marion Stokes believed that one day, television news would be edited, erased, or rewritten. So in 1979, she began recording television broadcasts and continued for 35 years. Marion Marguerite Stokes (née Butler, 1929–2012) was an American activist, librarian, television producer, and obsessive archivist.

In an era when television networks often erased old recordings to reuse the tapes, she decided to preserve the truth for future generations. The recordings were made using eight video recorders simultaneously, running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from 1979 until the woman's death on December 14, 2012. The digitization of the 70,000 tapes that Stokes' son donated to the charity is still ongoing.
