A draft of new safety requirements is already ready and could come into effect in 2027.
Chinese lawmakers are actively working to tighten vehicle safety requirements amid a craze among local manufacturers for new and sometimes ill-conceived technological innovations. Hidden door handles have already been banned from January 1, 2027, and the new draft will put an end to the use of steering wheels like Tesla's U-shaped steering wheel in cars.
It's worth noting that the document doesn't explicitly ban steering wheels without a top section. However, the list of mandatory safety tests does include impact tests at ten specific points on the rim, including the "center of the weakest section" and the "center of the unsupported section." Both of these points are missing on steering wheels, making it impossible to obtain regulatory approval.
Few manufacturers have offered steering wheels as standard equipment. These include, for example, Tesla, Lexus, IM Motors, and Jiyue Automobile, which went bankrupt in 2024.
