A spacesuit is an entire spacecraft, but designed for a single person. Providing oxygen, maintaining pressure, maintaining temperature, and protecting from the hazards of space are its primary functions.
The spacesuit consists of two parts: the shell and the backpack.
The hermetic, human-shaped shell is made of multiple layers: a pressure shell, a load-bearing structure, a lining, several layers of insulation, and an outer shell.
The HUT (hard upper torso) is a fiberglass cuirass. The front portion houses the control module. The text on it is reflected so it can be read through a mirror on the glove.
The PLSS (portable life support system) backpack is not replaceable, unlike the shell, and costs $150 million. Only 18 of these backpacks have been produced. It contains several batteries, primary and emergency oxygen tanks, carbon dioxide removal canisters, and water tanks. A fan and pump circulate water throughout the suit, and a radio is also included for communication.
