Racing car makers unveiled a road-going "analog" supercar for €3 million (9 photos)
The German company Capricorn is primarily known for developing and producing components for top-tier racing cars—Formula 1 and endurance racing. Now, Capricorn has decided to re-engineer its business as an automaker, unveiling its first road-going supercar, the 01 Zagato. It promises to be as close to a true-to-life car as possible. Only 19 of these cars will be built, priced from €3 million each.
The Capricorn 01 Zagato is built on a carbon fiber monocoque and features a carbon fiber body. The double wishbone suspension is mounted on subframes. Bilstein components, Brembo brakes, and 21-inch wheels are available in alloy or carbon fiber.
The new car is powered by a turbocharged 5.2-liter Ford V8 engine producing 900 hp and 1,127 Nm of torque and mated to a five-speed manual transmission from Cima, a supplier to Koenigsegg and Pagani. Performance figures are not available, but the supercar weighs 1,227 kilograms and has an estimated top speed of 350 km/h.
The supercar's body was designed by Zagato. The creators deliberately avoided protruding aerodynamic parts like wings and other winglets, but claim that the body structure itself will provide sufficient downforce. According to earlier teasers, the supercar features gullwing doors.
The interior of the 01 Zagato is devoid of displays, but instead is replete with mechanical knobs and switches, while the dials have a vintage design. The seats are fixed, while the steering column, pedal cluster, and even the gearshift lever, which can be moved longitudinally by 75 millimeters, are all adjustable.
For a more analog-like experience, the 01 Zagato will feature specific calibrations for the driver assistance systems and an unusual power steering system that will assist the driver only at parking speeds.
The new model's production run harks back to the year the Zagato studio was founded: 1919. Capricorn plans to expand its production to this model and claims to be able to produce up to 200 exclusive cars per year.
