A woman was on the brink of life and death because of sushi (5 photos + 1 video)
Yuli Vargas fell seriously ill after dining with friends. She contracted salmonella from eating raw seafood sushi. She was later diagnosed with lupus, a chronic disease in which the immune system attacks healthy tissue and organs.
"It all started with sushi. I contracted salmonella and typhoid fever, which caused a number of complications. I was examined and underwent numerous procedures. I had gallbladder surgery with very high levels of pancreatic enzymes, which made the surgery risky. I had to accept the fact that I might not survive. "That same week, I also had an endoscopy and colonoscopy," Vargas shares.
"I suffered nights of unbearable pain. No medication helped. Two hours after the surgery, I developed paralysis, affecting the right side of my body and face."
"As the pain and despair tore me apart, I couldn't eat, drink, or breathe. I was on parenteral nutrition for 16 days. First, they inserted a catheter into one arm, which was excruciating. Then they had to insert a catheter into my jugular vein, which led to an infection a few days later."
After lengthy examinations and consultations, doctors finally discovered the cause of the unusual symptoms: systemic lupus erythematosus.
"My diagnoses were pangastritis, moderate to severe ulcerative colitis, and systemic lupus erythematosus, which affects the nervous system and pancreas," says Yuli. "Finally, they found an explanation for why I was getting worse every day."
Since starting treatment, her condition has been improving.

"I'm currently recovering from surgery and paralysis. I'm gradually returning to my normal life. I'm learning more about lupus and striving to live life to the fullest. Because when I'm in pain, it's truly unbearable. I take several medications, including painkillers."
Vargas added: "I believe in God." I cried and said I would accept whatever he asked. And here I am, telling you my story and embracing this new stage in my life."
