The head of Bugatti explained why he sees no point in hybrids with turbocharged engines (40 photos) (photo)
Using turbocharged engines in hybrid powertrains makes no sense. This opinion was expressed by Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac in an interview with Top Gear. This was his explanation for the naturally aspirated engine in the Tourbillon.
The transition from the Chiron's turbocharged W16 to the Tourbillon's naturally aspirated V16 cost around 600 hp. However, the three-motor electric setup added even more – 800 hp. Therefore, according to Rimac, turbocharging is unnecessary in hybrid supercars and hypercars.
Ditching the turbocharger also saves weight, which is important for high-performance models, especially for hybrids, which require a fairly heavy electric superstructure.
Rimatz also indicated that future limited-edition versions of the Tourbillon hypercar will not feature turbocharging. Instead, engineers will tweak the settings of the electric system and the internal combustion engine. Furthermore, Bugatti's CEO didn't rule out the possibility of a purely gasoline-powered or rear-wheel-drive version.
The Bugatti Tourbillon was unveiled a year ago. Its powertrain includes an 8.3-liter, 1,000-horsepower naturally aspirated V16, developed with assistance from Cosworth, and three 250-kilowatt electric motors, which together produce an additional 800 hp. The internal combustion engine is mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The 24.8 kWh battery allows for an electric range of over 60 kilometers. Production vehicles will begin next year.
