In China, a couple divided a chicken through the court during a divorce (3 photo)
The couple had been unable to get a divorce because they could not agree on how to divide the poultry they raised. The stumbling block was 29 chickens that would not be divided equally
A woman surnamed Tu from a village in Sichuan Province and her husband Yang recently filed for divorce. They made their living mainly from livestock farming. Apart from the houses they had built themselves, the couple had no significant assets. Since they were from different villages, local regulations allowed them to decide on their own housing.
So the main subject of the division was the poultry farm. According to presiding judge Chen Qian, the couple kept 53 birds: 29 chickens, 22 geese and 2 ducks. The geese and ducks were divided without any problems, but the chickens became a stumbling block because there were not an even number of them.
The couple turned to their parents for advice, but they were unable to help, and the children refused to interfere at all. Tu said that she personally raised the chickens and had an emotional attachment to them, so she wanted to get one more. Yang objected, noting that he also spent a lot of time and effort caring for the birds.
Judge Chen offered two options: eat the extra chicken together, or have whoever kept it compensate the other for the cost. In the end, the couple agreed to cook the chicken and eat it together before the divorce. Afterwards, Yang drove Tu home on an electric bike.
They decided to remain financially independent, but support each other and maintain a basic friendship. They took the chicken as a symbolic "farewell meal," although they did not disclose the details of the dinner.
The story resonated on Chinese social media. One user joked: "The judge offered a fair solution, but the chicken is the real victim." Another added: "Maybe after the chicken soup they made up and changed their minds about breaking up."
