“Learn to Cook”: A Greedy Husband Received Only 0.5% of His Wife’s Fortune in a Divorce (4 photos)
Simon Entwistle and Jenny Helliwell got married in 2019 and settled in a luxury villa in Dubai. But their happiness did not last long, and in 2022, a difficult divorce process began. The 42-year-old native of Bolton, UK, asked the court to allocate him 2.5 million pounds sterling from his ex-wife's estate.
The couple entered into a prenuptial agreement, according to which they retained their property and divided joint assets in half in the event of a divorce. According to Entwistle, these conditions were not met. He was awarded £400,000, but of this amount he had to pay £75,000 for his ex-wife's legal costs. In total, the man received £325,000.
Before the trial, Helliwell offered Entwistle first £500,000 and then £800,000 to avoid a long trial. However, he demanded £2.5 million. His financial requests included £36,000 for flights and £26,000 for food per year. Simon said he couldn't even cook an omelette.
The judge advised him to learn to cook and added: "You don't have to be a chef to eat well. Marrying a wealthy man for three years does not automatically entitle you to that kind of life after the breakup."
Entwistle complained of gender bias and claimed the prenuptial agreement was invalid. He said Helliwell had failed to disclose £48 million of her assets, including businesses handed down to her by her father and the Wimbledon mansion where her mother lived.
The Court of Appeal found Helliwell guilty of fraud after the 42-year-old failed to declare most of her assets. The panel found that the defendant had deliberately concealed about 73% of her wealth from her husband when signing the prenuptial agreement. Her wealth is estimated at £66 million: real estate in Dubai and France, as well as various assets and business projects. While Entwistle's wealth is £850,000.
The judge urged the parties to come to a new agreement and expressed hope for a peaceful settlement without further hearings.
